The Surat Art Silk Cloth Manufacturers Association (SASCMA)
The textile industry in Surat dates back to 1925, with early artisans producing intricate designs on handlooms using silk and jari. The introduction of electricity led to the conversion of handlooms to power looms, increasing production and improving quality. The power loom industry in Surat grew gradually, especially with protection offered by import duties on Art Silk fabrics. Surat became a major center for Art Silk Weaving in India, with a significant number of power looms producing a large quantity of cloth. The industry upgraded its machinery in the fifties, installing Japanese machines and importing yarn.
The Surat Art Silk Cloth Manufacturers Association was established on February 25, 1955, to support small weavers. The main objectives of the association were to represent the industry to government bodies, facilitate the purchase of raw materials, and educate members on technology.
SASCMA procured and supplied raw materials like staple fiber yarn, viscose yarn, and nylon to its members. The association constructed a multi-story building called "Resham Bhavan" to house its activities and related organizations. SASCMA played a role in advocating for the establishment of nylon and polyester filament yarn production in the cooperative sector. The association assisted members in purchasing yarn, including imports of specialized yarns. SASCMA provided support to members during crises like communal riots and floods.
SASCMA initiated the establishment of a testing and research facility, leading to the establishment of SASCMA Man Made Textile Testing & Research Association. The association was instrumental in establishing the Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry (FIASWI) to bring together regional associations.
SASCMA established a trust for the development of the industry, contributing to the establishment of a Textile Technology and Engineering faculty at an engineering college. The association has also made donations to various organizations, including chambers of commerce, hospitals, and educational institutions.
